Queen Creek at Gilbert for the first game of the region home and away series. This game had larger significance for Gilbert, however, with senior Morgan Evenson on the verge of scoring her 1,000th point. At the opening buzzer her total sat at 991.
The Tigers were in command of the game from the beginning and scoring at will on a young Bulldog squad with only one senior, point guard Nadia Rosales, on the roster. It didn't help the Bulldogs that Gilbert senior point guard Meisha Caserio couldn't miss from beyond the arc. Between the inside presence of Aspen McClees dominating the low post and the outside threat of Evenson and Caserio the Queen Creek defense was overwhelmed. Gilbert's only freshman, Caia Campbell, had a solid performance as well.
By the time Evenson hit the 3 that sent her over 1,000 points at the 5:43 mark in the second quarter Gilbert had already run the score to 43-0. Gilbert called a time out and a short celebration was held mid court for Evenson. As head coach Colton Walker put it "I’m so glad we got the opportunity to celebrate Morgan’s 1000th point on our home court. She joined teammate Meisha Caserio in the exclusive club with a three pointer early on in the second quarter. To have coached both of them for the last four years has been a tremendous blessing and our program is better because of them." Evenson and Caserio were freshman in Walker's first year as Gilbert head coach.
The game didn't improve much for Queen Creek and it ended with a final score of 77-7 in the Tigers' favor. While not a real challenge for Gilbert, having a comparatively weaker opponent on this particular night allowed the Tigers to relax and enjoy Evenson's accomplishment.
