November 13th was National Signing Day across the country and ceremonies all over the state celebrated the accomplishments of high school athletes who will continue their education at the college level while playing their respective sports. It is the first day of the official signing period where a high school student can sign a letter of commitment to an NCAA program. At Pinnacle 12 such student athletes were recognized by their coaches in gym packed with family, friends and team mates.
Coach Jen White's Soccer team had 4 players sign letters including Aynsley Nuckols, Reece Reichwald, Mya Stenehjem and goal keeper Ivy Nystrom. Nuckols and Nystrom signed with University of Arkansas and Utah State, respectively, both ranked in the top 25 nationally.
Pinnacle Softball signed 3 players Takoda Crabtree, Payton Crank and Alexa Wilde to Boise State, University of Utah and University Of New Mexico. Boys basketball coach Charlie Wilde who generally is recognizing one of his players at signing day was there this time to celebrate his daughter Alexa. "She's put in all the work and overcome some real challenges along the way. She definitely has earned this. We couldn't be any happier for her or prouder of what she's accomplished" coach Wilde said.
Girls basketball head coach Erica Farnsworth will be sending center Nora Moo to Grand Canyon University next Fall. Coach Farnsworth told me "I only had Nora for 2 years and really wished I could have had her for four. She's been a real difference maker for this team. I'm going to miss her but at least she's playing close to home at GCU so I'll be able to go to some games and see her play at the next level."
Baseball had two players, Brayden Bullard and Ben Stowe, sign letters to play at valley community colleges. Bullard is going to Glendale and Stowe to Paradise Valley. Rounding out the Pioneer's dozen were volleyball player Elarika Eiklor who will be attending Westmont College and swimmer Lewis Esterly who received an appointment to the US Military Academy at West Point where he will continue to swim and serve his country after earning his commission.
All twelve student athletes distinguished themselves academically as well as in competition and National Signing Day is the tangible validation of the value hard work and dedication. Students across the valley should be commended for this achievement as they pursue their future endeavors.
