Pinnacle girls basketball on the road at Boulder Creek and riding in on the strength of a thus far undefeated season. Pinnacle swept the Feast Mode Tournament at Horizon including a win against a strong Gilbert team and then laid waste to defending 5A champions Canyon View by 32 points. Boulder Creek, however, won it's first game and lost the last seven.
The Pioneers pose an inside - outside threat that makes them very difficult to defend. Standout senior center Nora Moo was absolutely dominant in the paint scoring 19 points and collecting 11 rebounds. Junior guard Rylee Fraley and newcomer Claire Carnal, a freshman, scored 37 combined points and shot a combined 60% from beyond the arc. Their outside shooting success spread the Jaguars defense freeing up Moo underneath.
According to head coach Farnsworth, "We talk a lot about our defense being the driving force of our team to lead to great offense. Definitely our offense strength is not being one dimensional with clear inside out game. As well as making great plays for each other, ball movement and finding the open man."
The two guards also combined for seven assists which mostly went to Moo in the low post. To the coach's point on defense, Fraley led with 9 steals on the night. Carnal led all scorers with 20 and while it's still early in the season she looks like the best freshman point guard at Pinnacle since Ally Stedman in 2017.
Boulder Creek needed senior Kyleigha Ongstad to find a way to stop Moo and have a night like she did against Maryvale where she scored 24 points and shot 60% from the field. She wasn't able to do either against Pinnacle and the Jaguars suffered their worst loss of the season scoring only 15 to the Pioneers 83. The jaguars will have a chance to turn their luck around on December 10th when they host Casteel.
Meanwhile the Pioneers will have the toughest week of their young season facing Xavier and Millennium on the road on December 10th and 12th. If they are still undefeated by Friday morning you can pencil in their names for a deep post season run. And if they beat Desert Vista on December 16th you can write it in ink.
